With the sudden demise of Werner Stocker before filming began on the Hunters, the role of beloved womanizer and cavalier, Hugh Fitzcairn was spared death at the end of this episode. Fitz goes on his merry way and becomes one of the Fan Fav's even after his shocking death at the hands of Antonius Kalas.
The Hunters open with Fitzcairn coming to his old friend MacLeod with disturbing news - a number of their Immortal friends have mysteriously disappeared. Realizing too late that Darius is in danger, Mac and Fitz rush off to discover Darius dead in his chapel. Returning to Fitzcairn's flat to get his notes the, as yet, unidentified adversaries kidnap Hugh. Seemingly to recognize the tattoo to a previous encounter centuries earlier, MacLeod is determined to find the mortals responsible. Returning to the chapel Duncan discovers Darius left him a clue to these people. Using the ancient tome written in early Teutonic, the fifth chronicle, MacLeod discovers an organization of mortals who know about Immortals and seek to destroy them. Turning the tables on his tail, MacLeod finds where Horton and his crew are hiding in time to rescue Fitzcairn from their guillotine. Slipping off in true evil villain style, James Horton will return as the leader of these renegade Watchers, eluding and taunting the Highlander. Favorite Line: "MacLeod, why can't you live in an apartment like everybody else?" "That's Fitz." ok, too many ![]() Favorite Exchange: "I hope that isn't for me." "It is if you keep starring... Hey!" this was a tear jerker from the time he is killed to the end. This was the ep to see if you did not understand what it meant to have friends forever. The role that Darius played in Mac's life was unmistakable in this ep.
The depth of the character as he finds him in the chapel dead is one of the greatest angst of this ep. You want to say " he is in a better place" but at the same time you feel his pain. I love the do rag i guess that is what it is called here AP looks sensational as always and shines during the entire scene (see the pirate is in his blood) and i love the look with the comfortor wrapped around him that one is to die for Thanks |

I call it his *commando* look.
I love this episode so much for the story it tells about Duncan and his friendship with a man who had such a significant impact on his life and making him the man he has become. One of my favourite scenes is when he goes to the rectory and looks around while *who wants to live forever* plays, and he finds his clan colours which lead him to the Chronicle. Adrian plays the scene beautifully with his expressions as he remembers Darius while he searches through the rectory. This was a wonderful finale to season one. It leaves the viewer with so many questions about The Watchers and little did we know then what they would bring to the series. |

This one is definately one of my top 5 episodes. Which one of the 5 depending on mood, but I find it takes you to both extreme's in this episode. You see Duncan's loss of his old friend Darius, but at the same time you catch this glimpse of the light-hearted Cavalier of Duncan's youth and obviously many adventures. It also introduces what becomes, if not a great villian, a tenacious one. It's almost as if James Horton is the energizer bunny! Takes a licking and keeps on ticking! I thought for sure - the first time I ever saw Unholy Alliance II when he's up on the hill at the end that there was something TPTB weren't telling us. Like Horton was Immortal or something!
But any way you look at it, this episode was well done. A fitting tribute to the actor's character. And a little interesting tidbit, if any of you have ever read the Highlander Novel, Scimitar. The 1639 Duke that Fitzcairn mentions, is the same Duke Duncan is still with at the beginning. At least I'm pretty sure.

The only thing I didn't like (well except for Darius being killed) was the acting of AP when he discovered Darius body. Yeah I can believe the horror that Duncan felt but it hardly looked real.
That said, I think with this episode the series finally comes into it's own. My favorite part, when Duncan casts Darius ashes into the Seine.

I do try to ignore that minor flaw in an otherwise perfect episode. Sometimes I can't and I fall over laughing, but...
It's like that tiny flaw all artists have to insert into their work to make it "just that" original. LOL!

Definitely a tear jerker episode. Especially knowing that the actor who played Darius ( forgive me, I am really bad with names) had lost his battle with brain tumor and had, for real, passed away. I cannot imagine how hard it was for all people involved to do this episode
.On a more cheerful note: Adrian, as a pirate?! One word: yummy! That would be a dream come true: Johnny Depp and Adrian Paul sharing the big screen.... ( sorry for highjacking the topic )Bella |

Bella did you see Adrian in *The Immortal Adventures of Captain Drake*? He was sort of a pirate in that!

Forgive my fuzzy memory, but Tessa, wasn't Werner Stockard's death all kind of sudden & unexpected? I'd have to check my extra's on the disk and I really don't have the time to be doing that now. I'd only avoid spring chores that I really ought to be doing now
But I figured I should check on the game. But I could have sworn it was sudden. The writers had to go into some major rewrite on that episode. I also recall the original version of this script saw Fitzcairn being killed, but he proved to be such a good character they kept him in the rewrite.

I think he had cancer, didn't he? But even cancer doesn't always go the way one expects, especially if it was one of the leukemias. They can go into remission for years and then suddenly become active. I lost a physician that way: I called for an appointment and the receptionist began to cry.

Yes, his death was sudden. Apparently he had been having terrible headaches and I think that shortly after they diagnosed the cause as a brain tumour, he passed away and it was all very sudden and unexpected, so much so that they did have to do an eleventh hour rewrite if I recall correctly.

yeah, I recall it now from some the extras on the DVD... Anyhow, still, it must have been sad for the actors to play that footage
![]() Lightly changing subjects, I am having some friends over tonight and I am thinking about playing some Highlander (Series) for our "entertainment" ![]() Any suggestions to what series/episodes should I play first? (I want to have them hooked just like me )Bella |

That is a tough one!! Highlander offers romance, drama, comedy, action, there's something for everyone there! It's hard to say which episode to show people who have never seen it before for the first time, because of the immortal stuff and all the rules and such that they always refer to so it can be confusing. When I first started to catch Highlander, I only caught an episode now and then and I remember being completely confused because sometimes he was romantically with Amanda, sometimes with someone else, or Tessa, and sometimes in Paris and sometimes not. The very first episode I ever saw was *Dramatic License* and I loved it. Mountain Men was an early one for me too, I remember being confused but totally attracted to Duncan! LOL. But I would suggest. especially if they are females, that you show them *Studies in Light* as that is such a great episode. One of many options LOL. If you really want to avoid confusion, the best thing would be to start with *The Gathering* although I never like to show new fans that one because of that stuipid cartoonish Slan Quince! He was so ridiculous and it is almost embarrassing to watch him, but at the same time, Duncan and the rest of the cast are wonderful and it explains about immortality and his relationship with Tessa and how Richie came to be with them. Homeland is a lovely one too, I think I would choose either Studies in Light, or Homeland. Homeland has that fantastic flashback of Duncan before he became immortal and a beautiful yet tragic romantic love story which women always enjoy, add to that the romance of the Scottish Highlands.
Duende is a good one too. See, there are so many good choices for first time viewers to get hooked! Good luck whatever you decide on and I hope you can convert your friends to fans!Last edited by Tessa : 04-24-2010 at 06:42 PM. |
