What a horror!! Mine would be one of those jobs, if I were a Brit.
UK Research Faces Funding Cutbacks. BBC News (12/17, Gill) reports, "UK research could suffer, scientists say, in the wake of budget cuts announced by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)." The council "will cut 25% of its research studentships and fellowships," a move it said was "regrettable but necessary." Because of the "global financial crisis and the fall in the value of the pound," among other factors, not only has the council had to make cuts, "the cost of its subscriptions to large international facilities" has gone up. "The Royal Astronomical Society pointed out that an increasingly squeezed funding budget meant that the council had also withdrawn from some existing research projects." Minister of Science Lord Drayson "said that the cuts made it clear that there were 'real tensions' in having international science projects, large scientific facilities and UK grant giving roles within a single research council." He added that he would "work urgently...to find a better solution."

The bank I look after has a wonderful idea in how to save money. They use the threat of redundancy. They appear to be pruning the skilled workers on higher pay by making their jobs redundant just before Christmas. This doesn't mean they will lose their jobs though!!! They just change the job title and reduce their wages and get the same people doing the same job as before for less. Whilst the massive bonus system for the fat cats at the top are still in place.
I'm afraid it happens and your life is in the hands of those who don't give a damn. I can see some logic to all of thisthough, especially in the UK. Last month the government borrowed something like 25 billion pounds stirling for one reason or another. This equates to the total borrowing for the UK in 2002. It's the same in teaching. Let's try to remove the top paid teachers and replace them with newly qualified personel, they cost less. Great if you're just out of Uni but not so good if you've worked in teaching for a number of years. It may just be that we pay too much to staff we really want and for those we don't care about well they can go look elsewhere if they don't like it. Seems like a return to Victorian standards. The wealthy will remain wealthy and the rest can kiss my backside.

That's loathesome. Unfortunately, the folks being made redundant can't afford to quit in protest, can they?
